The Industrial Revolution did much for the world, but it’s hard to argue that something mass-produced or purchased from a big-box store has quite the same emotional weight to it as an object made by hand, you know? Because books and films aren’t the only objects that contain stories.

A sturdy wooden chair, one carved with a niece’s initials and built just her size, tells the tale of an uncle who wanted to give her a piece of furniture she could keep forever, and maybe hand down to her own children one day. A jewelry box whose inner lid is engraved with a spray of stars shares the history of a couple’s first date at a planetarium. A colorful red panda wall hanging serves as a sign of affection between two roommates.

Because when you open the door of your great-aunt’s wardrobe, or your uncle uses the cooking spoon you commissioned for him, we’re not talking about just using an object for a purpose—we’re talking about connecting with friends and family through space and time, and that is a magical thing.

And who wouldn’t want to be in the business of making magic?
